2021 Cabernet Franc

100% Cabernet franc; Idiot’s Grace Vineyard in Mosier, Oregon; planted 2004; Columbia Gorge AVA; 205 cases produced; grown in soil from volcanic ash and loess over old flood deposits; brought up in steel and veteran barrels; ABV 13.4%.

I guess I was happier knowing nothing of the existence of “heat domes”, but this was that year. Still hanging on the trees that week, late-ripening cherry varieties suffered dramatically. Grapes handled it much better.

This wine is strikingly plush, with an allure that reads as self-assured without being at all attention seeking. While I am often captivated by bottles that challenge my expectations, my understanding, or my palate, there is a certain exhilaration to wines that are effortlessly delightful, that are like: remember? we’re just fruit— These are wines that meet you with a shy smile, that put you immediately off your guard. The glass empties quickly.
