100% Sauvignon blanc; estate grown in Hood River, Oregon; planted 2005-2008; Columbia Gorge AVA; 804 bottles produced; grown in soils from volcanic ash and loess over old flood deposits; brought up in veteran barrels; 12.4% ABV.
We picked this cool Hood River site a little later in ’23 than we have in a while, and the wine hits the tongue as crisp and succulent as a ripe cider apple. From behind all that juicy fruit rise the signature, grey-green aromatics of Sauvignon blanc, more mineralogical than botanical. You can take a berry between your teeth in the days just before harvest and you’ll find this trait is already, thrillingly evident.
(In the cellar, we’re loath to leave any of that behind: after pressing, we rob the spent berries that same September afternoon to produce piquette—a fragrant, low-ABV beverage, like a watercolor impression of this wine.)
